4.6l problem

ok,i just bought this 01 gt about a month ago.it has 112,000 on it.it runs good and all but here in the last week or so i am noticing it has started burning oil out the tailpipes.if i let it idle for a little bit it smokes like crazy. the only thing i have done is i put a mac prochamber on it with mil eliminators.
i read that 4.6's with over 100k have valve guide seal problems.is this true?? anyone else run into this problem?? i changed the pcv thinking it may be stuck but no luck.please help,i know nothing about the 4.6 motors.i am a 5.0 guy.haha.

thanks

Re: 4.6l problem

The only Modulars that I know of that are know to develop oil burning issues as a common problem are the early 2v's that came in 91-97 Lincoln Town Cars and Ford Crown Vics I believe. I'm no expert though, and thats just what I've heard. I've owned a couple of Modular Mustangs,(both 2v and 4v) and neither ever seemed to burn any noticable oil, and my parents own a couple of 2v Modular vehicles with high mileage and they don't burn oil either.

Hopefully it is a problem with your valve seals, and not with your piston rings.

I use to own a 95 Integra GSR that burnt oil like crazy, and it had busted piston rings in atleast one cylinder. That motor had a cylinder go out at 124,000. Ofcourse that car has the popular B18C1 Honda motor.

Re: 4.6l problem

A lot depends on how ruff the 112K were before you bought the car.. Also depends on IF the car was ever parked for a "extended" amount of time.

BEST way to tell is to do a compression leakdown test. Unless you want to pull the heads off lol lol.. A regular compression test can be "misleading" . IF it passes a leakdown test you know the rings are good and its a seal/guide issue.

that was the next thing for me to test.i have to wait till the snow melts first.don't think it has been abused to bad.the car is really clean.maybe it has the wrong weight oil in it or something.will know more after the leakdown test is done.
