351 heads on a 302

i was wondering if their were any benefits of running 351 windsor heads on an 86 302, or if they would even fit. My brother found a good deal on a set and wanted to ask on here for him. He said he thought the guy said something about eco heads or something like that

Re: 351 heads on a 302

I know they used to run certain 351 heads in classes where a stock head is required. They will fit. I dont know if the chamber size is different or not though. By "eco" head, I would guess he either meant they are smog heads(eco friendly),or their a cheap alternative to aftermarket heads. Any idea what year they are ? Casting #'s ?

Re: 351 heads on a 302

Really won't be allot of benefits, since the heads will flow about the same, but if the heads are rebuilt and ready to rumble, it would probably be worth buying and installing if the price is right........The 351 w uses 1/2 head bolt, 302, uses 7/16. ARP makes these conversion bushings, so you can still use the 7/16th head bolts on your block.

Depending on the price, he may want to look at a set of aluminum heads from tristatecylinderhead.com i believe he will actually get better flow from a set of these heads.......

Re: 351 heads on a 302

The older 351 heads with the dogleg water passages were good for a few ponies. I think they were like pre 72 351W heads. They had 1/2 inch bolt holes unlike the 7/16 of the 302

Re: 351 heads on a 302

the 69 and 70 model 351 heads are decent for a cast head. pretty much a gt-40 head.

the casting #'s will be c90e or d00e

Re: 351 heads on a 302

I used a set of 1969 351w heads on my 5.0 back in 2000 or so. They gave me about 6mph in the 1/4 mile. with no other changes. Of course this particular set of heads has had a shit ton of port work done to them. They should give you a good boost.

Smile Re: 351 heads on a 302

The old speed trick was swapping a set of 351C-2V heads onto a 302.

If you have the cash to build a stout short block and a .600 or better lift cam this would be the way to go.

'69 to '70 Windsor heads at one point in time were the only offerings we had out there... but now after you install a set of good valves, and have them properly ported you are running into the costs associated with just laying down the money for some brand new out of the box Twisted Wedge aluminum heads.

Re: 351 heads on a 302

I am putting a set of 69 351 heads on a 302 right now. They have good valves but no port work. I figure since i got them for free they have to be better then 79 302 heads. I am hoping to pick up a solid 20HP or so
