mechanical question, 97 crown vic

Noticed the other day that to get the car (97 crown vic) out of park I had to stand on the brakes. Problem kept getting worse and now I can't put it in gear at all. Brake fluid and transmission fluid are fine, and no noticeable damage to sensors. Does one of the solenoids on the transnission control this as a safety of some type?

I would think so , since you have to mash the brakes to get it into gear . Is there a switch under the dash on the brake peddle ?

Re: mechanical question, 97 crown vic

There is a little switch behind the brake pedal that is actuated by you stepping on the brake. This allows a positive current to flow to the brake lights turning them on. The same current flows to the shift interlock allowing you to shift the gear selector out of park.

The most common cause of no brake light-- stuck in park-- is a broken wire at / or close to the connection to the little contact switch behind the brake pedal. Also, The interlock does indeed have a fuse, check your fuse.

If you are in a pinch you can slide the key into the cylinder, turn to the "on" position (NOT run), move the shift lever to N, then start the car.

Re: mechanical question, 97 crown vic

Did a little more research. Fuses are all good but I don't have brake lights. Going back out to test the switch now.

Re: mechanical question, 97 crown vic

The switch itself has continuity when the pedal is pressed, however there is no power to it. Anyone know where I can get a wiring diagram of the brake circuit?
