Starter/Clutch Interlock Switch

The starter/clutch switch is designed to prevent starting the engine unless the clutch pedal is fully depressed. The switch is connected between the ignition witch and the starter motor relay coil; it maintains an open circuit with the clutch pedal up (engaged).

The switch is designed to self-adjust automatically the first time the clutch pedal is pressed to the floor. The self-adjuster consists of a two-piece clip, snapped together over a serrated rod. When the plunger or rod is extended, the clip bottoms out on the switch body and allows the rod to ratchet over the serrations to a position determined by the clutch pedal travel limit. In this way, the switch is set to close the starter circuit when the clutch is pressed all the way to the floor (disengaged).

CHECKING CONTINUITY AND ADJUSTMENT

1) Disengage the inline wiring connector at the jumper harness.

2) Using a self-powered test lamp or a continuity tester, check that the switch is open with the clutch pedal up, and closed at approximately 1 in. (25mm) from the pedal's full-downward position.

3) If the switch does not operate, check to see if the self-adjusting clip is out of position on the rod. It should be near the end of the rod.

4) If the clip is out of place, remove and reposition the clip to about 1 in. (25mm) from the end of the rod.

5) Reset the switch by pressing the clutch pedal to the floor.

6) Recheck the switch for continuity in both positions. If the switch is damaged, replace it.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

7) Disengage the wiring connector.

8) Remove the retaining pin from the clutch pedal.

9) Remove the switch bracket attaching screw.

10) Lift the switch and bracket assembly upward to disengage the tab from the pedal support.

11) Move the switch outward to disengage the actuating rod eyelet from the clutch pedal pin and remove the switch from the vehicle.

To install:
Warning "Always install the switch with the self-adjusting clip about 1 inch (25mm) from the end of the rod. The clutch pedal must be fully up (clutch engaged). Otherwise, the switch may be misadjusted. "

12) Place the eyelet end of the rod onto the pivot pin.

13) Swing the switch assembly around to line up the hole in the mounting boss with the hole in the bracket.

14) Install the attaching screw.

15) Install the retaining pin in the pivot pin.

16) Connect the wiring harness.
