Starter or Solenoid?

My son's 92 hatch will not start. He went out of town overnight (88 miles away) and it started fine when he left home and when he left to come home. He gets home and it sits for a couple of hours and he goes to move it so he can install some interior LED lights (yes, I know I have apparently raised a ricer) and it won't start. We replaced the solenoid about a month ago when we thought it went out, but it turned out that the starter bolts were missing or very loose (I could stick a finger between the starter and the bellhousing) so I bought a couple of bolts and had him tighten it down. Started right ever since that time. Since I wasn't sure if the solenoid was bad or not, I had him keep it. Tonight I had him put the old solenoid back in to see if that would work. No go. Both solenoids just set there and click, but the starter never turns or even attempts to turn. So, is it that both solenoids are bad or is the starter toast? Need to know so I can keep the cost down on this repair.

Re: Starter or Solenoid?

Thanks guys. It was the starter. The whole deal was a PITA. Took the old starter out, had it tested and it passed (twice) so we replaced the cable from the starter relay/solenoid and it still didn't start. Replaced the relay/solenoid on the fender and it still didn't start. Finally figured out that it had to be the starter even if it did pass the test. Replaced it and it fired right up. At least the kid knows how to change a starter now.

Oh and this is number 3000 for me. Not quite the post whore that Doug, Brian and Allen are, but I'm trying to catch up...........lol.
