Rear End Girdle.

I am getting ready to install 4.10 gears in the Stang. My question is should I upgrade to a Ford Racing rear end girdle for more strength or is it not needed?
And my second question is do aftermarket coil packs do any good or is it bull?

Re: Rear End Girdle.

Coil packs aren't needed until you have assloads of power. The factory stuff is good. An ignition controller would do you wonders though. Get an MSD or something instead of the coils. Your's are perfectly fine for much higher power levels.

The rear girdle cover is good insurance for the street but is a must at the track. I just got one on my car since I upgraded to 31 spline and plan on some T-brake launches. I used to launch my 28 spline stuff at 5500rpm with the stock cover, a stock T-5, an aluminum DS and a set of 3.73 gears. Others have had the stock stuff break instantly. It's hit or miss. If you have the cash, I'd say get a girdle. I didn't HAVE to before but that's not saying you won't warp or damage anything. It makes draining and replacing fluid easy. You're doing the gears, just get one for the added insurance.

Re: Rear End Girdle.

Thank you Dave. I was thinking it wouldn't hurt, but I am getting to the end of the cash flow so I did not want to waste money. It will hopefully hit the track by April of next year with all mods done. I will order a girdle ASAP.

Re: Rear End Girdle.

Coming from you Bobby, I don't know how to read that question. Are you serious or goofing?

Re: Rear End Girdle.

I've broken and seen a lot of rear ends break. From my experience, here's the order that OEM parts will break. Upgrade as you see fit.

- axles, break about 2-3" from the end of the splines
- diff carrier, breaks down the center where the pin goes through
- housing, first the tubes will spin in the center section, next the tubes will twist, lastly the caps will blow off
- never seen a ring/pinion break unless something else breaks first

So, IMO, unless you upgrade the axles and carrier, weld the tubes to the housing and reinforce the tubes, the support cover is not needed. But it certainly won't hurt anything.

Re: Rear End Girdle.

Get it for nothing else but the ease of changeing the fluids, like Dave said. I got the Trick Flow but i guess their all basicly the same.
