my LTD

here's the deal. In the fall of 1998 i aquired my first car - an '87 Ford Mustang GT. I loved the car, but being 16 at the time, Insurance was killing me to begin with, and in early '99 i had a minor accident and state farm decided to drop me. unable to insure it and having only a p/t after school job, i couldnt afford it, so i sold it and bought this:



1987 Ford LTD Crown Vic. the car was clean, freshly painted, needed some interior cleaning and a new steering column. much bigger and roomier than the mustang, quite a change, but insurance was cheap and it got me around. that mustang bug got to me, and me being a young mechanic, it didnt take long for me to want to start customizing. in the spring of 2000, i had tints and modified the hubcaps... little shit you do when you're a high schooler.


late in '00, i blew up the engine.. sorta.. so i rebuilt my 1st engine ever by myself on it. lo-po 5.0, had no idea back then how to mod or the differences between the lo-po and the HO

by '01 i had a new set of wheels and tires. didnt last long because i could never gett them balanced right and caused a bad vibration above 65MPH. also i got duals that year.. sporting the same duals today, except new tips



'02 i had to switch wheels because i was working out in Hodgkins IL and the drive was killing my suspension. got 15x6.5 turbines:



'03 as my 21st b-day present, i got a brand-spankin new set of wheels. blackened the grille.. the paintjob that was done previously had a cheap clearcoat that was now fading real bad. also this would be the 2nd year i wouldnt drive it during the winters ince by this time i had another daily driver ('86 thunderbird)



i graduated from tech school in '03 and one of my neighbors gave me an '86 F-150 project truck as a gift, so most of '03 and '04 i spent working on the truck. it was a guinea pig for alot of things, including a full EFI conversion from the 1bbl carb it had. the LTD was the DD until wintertime when the truck ran. '04 was a disaster year for me because of my fiancee breaking up w/ me AFTER i had quit my job and prepared almost evereything so i can move down to FL with her, LTD got neglected and by early '05 she looked like just another beater:


i was just about to give up on it and get me another Mustang, but I had the car for too long to just let it go. I decied on a full resoration, but give it a whole new look. I started in April '05, stripped off almost evereything, inclduing the vynl top.





decied on a pitch black single-stage enamel. easy to maintain, no clearcoat BS.





i needed wheels to match the new look.. i scored a set of FMC 8" dog dishes from a guy in Canada, but i had no steelies to use them on.. i scored a set at a local yard, cleaned & painted them:





one last thing as far as the exterior, i swapped out the chrome tips for much longer ones:

yes, i did paint all the pieces. i did alot of it in 2000 (older pics) when the engine was out. most of it has been redone with the recent engine work i did (newer pics)

new caliper hoses
rear heavy-duty springs w/ air shocks
rear police 1" swaybar
new rear brakes & drums
15x6 FoMoCo police/fleet steel wheels on 235/65 Futura GLS tires


body:
bodywork done 4/2005, given the MIB treatment
removed complete front clip & fenders
all body panels replaced with rust-free panels
vynl top removed
single stage DuPont 'pitch black' polyurethane enamel
blackened grille and bezels
police/fleet chrome trim upgrade
new 'LTD' front bumper
3"x24" chrome tips


interior:
complete interior swap from a '89 Crownvic LX
floor shifter conversion
woodgrain delete
JVC Kameleon CD head unit
Pioneer 5 1/4" 2 way for thr front doors
Pioneer 6x9 3-ways for the rear deck
Pioneer 3" tweeters inside the front dash
Pioneer 12" 600w sub

its a reference to one of my many avatars


it was originally a joke my friend came up with.



back in the early 90's, my dad used to have some commerical properties. one of them was an apartment building, which had its own laundromat. the washing machines were real old.. from the 70s or so. anyway there was this 'speed queen' washing machine that even had 'coin operated power' on the machine itself. the tenants would always complain about the machine because it would shake and start moving from its spot like in the simpons whhen they were racing the washer and dryer at moe's

around 2000 or so i got a new set of wheels for the car, but when i was working out in hodgkins, the car would shake above 65MPH. my friend took a ride in it and he called it the speed queen.. '..not only does it look like it, it even shakes like it!'

so the name kinda stuck on since then.


BTW:

if the mustang had a mother, this would be it. :thumbup:
