external hard drive?

anyone have any opinions on external harddrives? my computer is royally f---ed and i need to get everything off of it. The bitch turns off but won't turn back on randomly. I have no idea why.

I don't have a lot of files, I have about 4Gs of pics, 9Gs of music, and a couple programs i would like to save.

Here's my question- can you switch programs from one harddrive to another, like Microsoft Office? Or would i have to reinstall using the CD? I've never looked into this before, but I guess its time.

Here are the one's I'm looking at. yeah, they're pink. i'm not married to the idea of a pink one, but i want somethign small and cute and portable.

I would probably get the westerndigital........has really friendly software that will help you keep the files in order and open them when and where ever you want too.

if you get an external drive you can back up all your data to it and then redo your pc.

You should be able to transfer the info from one to the other. I have a WD and have had no problem with it.

thanks guys, after everything i've read, i think i am going to go with the WD one.

i could redo the laptop but its huge and cumbersome and the wireless card and battery are dead and i'd really like something new. its quite a few years old and has a lot of problems.

I had a bad virus/trojan on my old laptop. Only way to fix it, was a full reboot, and scrub. For my files I picked up a 16G flash drive from office depot. If you don't have a lot of files it is a cheap solution. Just another option incase you wanted to save a few bucks. Externals are nice though for games and stuff so they load faster instead of the built in one.
