Sparky

Went to Seafoam the Mustang this evening and noticed something disturbing. I see a bright blue flash of a spark jumping from the bottom of the wire boot to the block or further down on the base of the plug. Obviously something is not right, but my question is what? Is the plug or the wire bad? The wire is fully seated on the plug and there does not seem to be a miss. So what gives?

Re: Sparky

pull the plugs and look for a burn mark on the ceramic. if none are present them i am guessing cold be your wires. you can take a spray bottle of water and mist the wires...a bright blue spark will be present if you have a bad wire.

Re: Sparky

Yeah I would say try the plug first. Check it for cracks, or like Brian said>>> it will have a brown or black burn spot that will be easy to see on the plug's ceramic.

While it may not miss on that cylinder, if it's jumping fire to the block or something else, it's going to be weak on that cylinder and make the rest of the motor labor to try and compensate.

Re: Sparky

Finally got around to pulling the plugs and checking on this issue. Didn't find any cracked ceramics, but did find something else. The plugs were the Diamond Fire E3 plugs. The terminal (top were the wire connects) are screw on and were loose. I figure that the vibrations would loosen and tighten the terminal causing the intermitent sparking. Almost all of them were loose. I replaced them with NGK's and the problem went away, idle is better. Also power and throttle response seem improved. I have since talked to someone who said that when you get plug with screw on terminal you should unscrew it, put loctite on it and screw it back on. Oh well, next time. I'm sticking with the NGK's.

Re: Sparky

Damn I hate those screw on types! They are only good for bikes, and well for unscrewing when you don't need them too!

Good find man.
