Is This The EcoBoost Mustang?

Ford has said over and over again that eventually, its line of EcoBoost turbocharged engines would find its way into every model in their lineup. Yet they’ve been mum when it comes to an EcoBoost Mustang. It makes sense, as the EcoBoost engines make big power on fewer cylinders. The 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 in the 2011 F-150, for example, makes 365 horsepower, nearly as much as the 5.0 V8.

So are these pictures from Inside Line of the mythical EcoBoost Mustang? We certainly hope so.

There are a number hints that under the surface, this Mustang might not be all it appears to be. For one, take a look at that lower front fascia. There are two very suspicious holes on either side, perhaps to funnel air directly into two turbochargers? That opening in the middle also looks just wide enough to fit an intercooler. The lack of fog lights on the center grille is also telling, allowing more air to flow through to the high-capacity radiator.

It is the one interior shot that really stirs all the speculation that this is the EcoBoost Mustang we all want. On the top of the gauge cluster it says “Premium Fuel Only”, and the tachometer appears to reach all the way to 9,000 RPM, though the space between 8,000 and 9,000 is the redline. All the other Mustang gauges only go to 8,000. The 5.0 liter V8 revs to 8,000 RPM, but why would it need two inlets unless it was a twin-turbo Shelby GT500? The supercharged GT500 revs to just 7,000, as does the 3.7 liter V6. The other possibility to consider is a direct injection, turbocharged 5-liter. Casting marks on the combustion chamber for the new 5-liter heads show that there could be provisions direct injection as well.

The EcoBoost 3.5 liter taps out at 6,200 RPM, so it wouldn’t fit the bill either, though it still makes the most sense since its already going into the F-150.

The Boss does have a 9,000 RPM tack. But the grill is different. It would be awesome if it was an ecoboost V-8. I would imagine it is probably pics of a unmarked Boss.

Only makes sense to add this motor to the lineup. I think an ecoboost 5.4 in the Shelby would be sweet tits with a side of vagina!!
