Tranny Issues

Here we go again. My son called from work yesterday and said that the tranny on his 4 banger was slipping on the way to work. I grabbed a quart of fluid, funnel and a rag and headed over to check it out. When I checked the fluid level (before adding any at all), it was overfull and clean. There were was no indication of being burnt or anything like that, just over full. I asked if he had added any fluid recently and he said he had not. I fired it up and drove it around and it seemed to be ok. It seemed to hesitate before dropping in gear going to reverse, but nothing beyond that. I checked the level again and it was still in the same place. He drove it home after work and said it was worse and had to limp home. I have not checked it today, but don't expect to find much of a change. I'm thinking about draining about a quart of fluid out of to get it to where it should be and adding some Lucas Transfix. Anyone have any ideas about what might be going on? This is getting old and expensive.

Re: Tranny Issues

i'm having the same damn problem with my tranny in my 4 banger. It will take a second to go in drive/reverse and then takes awhile to shift untill its warmed up then shifts fine. I changed the filter and the fluid is still full and clean just like your sons so i bet they are just fucked

Brand new fresh rebuild by a qualified tranny shop.

This one was driving fine until yesterday. Warming up is not helping either.

Some new info on how it is acting. He said it would rev up, but wouldn't accelerate no matter what gear it was in at the time. I wonder if the torque converter is toast. That is the only common thread through all of these problems. Do torque converters go bad?

Re: Tranny Issues

Took it by the tranny shop today and they confirmed the torque converter is toast. I had them order me one and we will get it installed as soon as it comes in and we can get everything out to my brother's place.
