pinion gear removal

Are there any special tricks you guys know of as to how to more easily get a stock pinion gear out. I've been wackin at mine with a 3 pound sledge for a while now and it aint budgin. I read another forum where a guy said he smashed his for over an hour with a 5 pound sledge to get it out and I would like to do all I can to avoid that. thanks!

Re: pinion gear removal

Is the pinion yoke still on? I have used a 2 jaw puller to remove the pinion yoke, then the gear comes right out. I have also used an air chisel, air chisel is alot faster.

Re: pinion gear removal

The pinion gear will get stuck on the outer pinion bearing. Sometimes you have to really beat on it to get it out. If you are doing this on jack stands, it's hard to get a good swing on it to get it out. Keep hitting it.
