4.0L & 4.6L Engine Starter Removal and Install

To Remove:

WARNING
When servicing the starter motor or carrying out other underhood work near the starter motor, be aware that the heavy gauge cable at the starter solenoid is "electrically hot" at all times. A protective cap is provided over this terminal that must be installed after servicing. Be sure to disconnect the negative battery cable before working on or near the starter. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.

CAUTION
When working in area of the starter motor, be careful to avoid touching hot exhaust components. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.

1) Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2) Raise the vehicle on a lift.
3) Remove the starter solenoid terminal cap.
4) Remove the wiring from the starter solenoid.
5) Remove the bolts and the starter motor.

To Install:

NOTE: To insure correct starter installation, the upper bolt(s) must be tightened first.

1) Position the starter motor and install the bolts finger tight. A) First tighten the upper bolt(s) and B) the lower bolt to 18 ft-lb.
2) Connect the wiring to the starter solenoid terminals.
3) Install the starter solenoid terminal cap.
4) Connect the negative battery cable.
