302 crack ing

i have heard a lot about the 302 blocks start to split or crack when you get up around the 600 hp range. does anybody know why they do this and is it really that bad or just some of the full out racing engines doing this. Just wondering im a little bored and im planning on building a 347 strocker in the somewhat close future.

Next project is a 347 stroker or 496 BBC not sure. But then a mustang for the 347 or 67 chevy pickup for the 496.

whats causing them to split or crack is the added torque the engine is producing. i have seen my old 302 pull the head studs right out of the block i also cracked a block...mind you those were 2 older motors

they are not beefy enough in the lifter galley to handle that kind of hp for a long period of time.

550 is about the max. the blocks were just poorly made hence the need for aftermarket blocks. revs also kill the motor. try to keep the revs at a max of 6500 if you want the block to last. Also get main studs, deburr the block, and get a main girdle to help with main stability.

I agree with him. From my experience its luck of the draw. One will break at 500,the next will hold 650 for a long time. I just gave(Yes I said gave) a stock block 331 to my dad. He's running mid 9's on a 175 shot. IMO tuning is one big key to survival too.
