They are valve locks. Valve locks are little metal shells that fit in the valve stem groove and wedge in the retainer opening. Without them, the retainer wouldn't stay in position.

Valve locks come in 7* and 10* versions, 7* locks are more then adequate. As you increase the lock angle, you lose clamp strength. This means you give up some wedging action against the lock by the retainer. When this happens, rather than clamping the stem along the keeper groove, more load is transferred to the groove and the little tang inside the lock.

Just a side note, there are no performance gains between the two locks.

Personnally if you are going to rev to 8 grand, I would use 10 degree locks with titanium retainers and 7/16 rocker studs unless your going with shaft rockers. Definately use a stud girdle if going with stud mount rockers. 10 degree locks lessen the chance of a valve pulling through the retainer.

If your going with a solid roller, buy your heads bare. You should always match your springs to the cam your running. Go with the springs the cam manufacturer recomends, not a head manufacturer that says good to .xxx lift. Yes, the springs will handle that kind of lift, but what about ramp speeds, could easily go into premature valve float.

See, I was right. I forgot to mention the bigger studs on the heads though. Good call on those.

werd, i talked to a race shop here locally today and he told me the same. buy the vic jr's bare and let him build them and pick out a custom cam so he can match it all.

he said he'd do power range from 4-8k and match everything for that rpm range and solid roller cam. oh and the custom cam will be an isky cam if i go through him.....

heads are 450 each bare, solid roller cam 275, solid roller lifters 475, and so on for the rest of the stuff. not sure what exactly he has in mind but i know he does excelent work.

yes stud mount rockers and i still have to get a girdle for the bottom end as well.

who's stud girdle should i go with?
