Engine Talk
If you are looking for information on a specific engine, you are in the right place. Hopefully we can all learn from each other on how to tune your car for daily driving and how to get the last ounce of performance from your ford engine at the track.

4.6L in a new Thunderbird

I know, I'm asking about the new Thunderbird, but, I'm also asking about the Mustang 4.6L engine. Has anyone done this? 2V, 3V, or 4V? Is the 3.9L in the Thunderbird the same family as the 4.6? Is it physically smaller? How about the bellhousing bolt pattern. I am more into the Fox bodies and know little about the newer motors. I currently have an 85 LX, 5-speed with a 79 351W. Lowered, 2000 GT spindles and PBR front brakes with a 94 GT rear with disc brakes and 4.11. Just thought the Thunderbird might be fun to play with (for the wife of course).

The 3.9l in the Tbird is the same as the one in the Lincoln LS, both cars are based on the Jaguar X-Type chassis, they also use a Jaguar motor (the 3.9l V8, also the 3.0l V6 in the LS is Jaguar as well). I'm not sure of exact dimensions but they seem MUCH smaller than the mod motors. They use ford transmissions, but the part numbers are unique so I'd put money on them not bolting up to anything else.

i think the actual bellhousing is shorter on the tbirds, i've heard of this combo being attempted before, but then again a complete mustang drivetrain and a good welder, you can make anything fit........

Thanks for the info. I kind of like the Thunderbird body and thought with a GT drivetrain and some supension mods this might be interesting.

i've got a 94 t bird, and as soon as my wife get's her mustang ima drop a 408 stroker, and a manual in it. just for shits and giggles it's a 6 cyl, and i'd never be able to sell it for what i'd want out of it, so ima just let it tear itself apart.
