Flooding out?

Hey, I'm new here, but i heard that this was a good place to get some answers. I have a '92 5.0. It runs great, except after the motor warms on up. Then whenever I'm rolling into the gas, it starts sputtering and falling on its face. It doesn't really do it in 1st or 2nd gear, but it gets pretty bad from 3rd and up. The car has 24 lb injectors and a C&L Mass air kit with the correct tube for the injectors. The car also has a major idle problem, it will idle anywhere from 1800 rpm down to 800, and the idle set screw on the throttle body is backed all the way out! I dont really know where to start on this one, I've never owned a Ford before, so can anybody help out?

Check the O2 sensors, TPS, fuel filter. Hotwheels has a tech article on the tps. Might want to clean the mass air too.

Just cleaned the mass air today, but still having problems. As far as I know, the computer isn't throwing any codes. I've heard that the TPS has to be calibrated when swapped out. Is this true?

Sounds like you tps is out of whack.........you will need a ohm meter to do this, but:

With your key on, engine off take a needle an pierce into the green wire at your tps. Take your ohm meter and ground the black line from the ohm meter somewhere on the car, and take the red line and touch the needle (that should be in the green wire at the tps.) What is the reading? It should be .096.....If it is higher or lower then that, you will need to loosen the 2 screws holding the tps and move the tps till you get it set close to the .096 setting.

With that done, you will now need to take a feeler gauge .010-.012 and check your throttle adjustment screw.....the feeler gauge should move between the screw and the little linkage to the throttle body plate, snuggly....

Now go ahead and start the car and check your timing on the engine......see if the idle is better, you may have to set the timing.......if you do set the timing, once that is done, shut off the engine and preform the above item's one more time with the key on, engine off........just to make sure everything is still set right........

Ok, thanks for the info, but on the ohms reading, which scale on the ohmmeter are you using? I could probably figure it out though, just go close to whatever I've got now.... Maybe it will help the idle out, but i'm pretty sure the car is still gonna run pig rich. Any suggestions? maybe bump the fuel pressure down?

Ok, had to replace the TPS, the signal coming out was jumping around all over. But the car still wont idle, the damn thing is hunting it between 750 and about 1300 rpm. And its still sputtering and falling on its face when pulling out hard. Any ideas? The last things I can change out is the MAF and the O2 sensors... unless the ignition module on the side of the distributor has anything to do with it?

Have you tuned the computer? I have read that stock computers are set up for 19lb injectors and have a hard time with 24 lb injectors until they are told to work with the new injectors. You may have to get a custom tune to help with your idle and running issues. I had similar idle issues until I put a custom burned chip and that solved most of it. The rest was setting the idle screw to the right setting.

As far as i know, the computer is stock. I was under the assumption that the C&L MAF kit with the tube in it for the 24lb injectors was supposed to take care of that, but my faith in that is going out the window. The car just started doing this, was running fine before, but still had a bit of an idle problem and was bad cold natured.

I would look into the O2 my 90 did the same thing. the c&l with the right tube will tell the computer to run with the 24lb.

Ok, I have replaced both O2 sensors, checked timing, even backed the fuel pressure down a little bit. But the car still smells like it is running rich at idle, and is still sputtering and falling on its face when pulling hard in the top of second and up. I havent got a clue as to whats goin on now. Anyone have any ideas?
