Cylinder Head Advice Needed

Hello Everyone,

I was hoping I could get some advice on what heads to install on my 289. I'm not positive of my cam spec's, but think it's stock. I wan't to re use my Magnum Stud 1.6 rockers and go with aluminum.

I was considering AFR 165's non emission or Edl Performer RPM's, but not sure if my K Code manifolds will bolt up. I also don't know what size pushrod's to use etc. I have a 650 cfm holley and 289 performer intake and want the new heads for power increase and lighter front end.

If anyone has installed heads on there 289 and have some advice on what they think would work well for me, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Rich

The AFR 165 heads would be tough to beat out of the box on a 289. You may want to upgrade to better valvesprings if you want to wind it past 6000rpm though.

twisted wedge's work on a 289 ? They make more power than the AFR 165's. Almost as much as the 185's.

You really should think about upgrading your cam and adding headers to take full advantage of the extra airflow of aftermarket heads. Most street oriented heads have the same bolt patterns for the exhaust as your stockers, but some have a raised port that may require exhaust mods to fit. For a stocker 289, I would think about the AFR's, Edelbrocks, TW's, Brodix ST's, or GT-40X's. They're all good heads, but without further mods you won't get near their full potential.

I appreciate everyones advice. I'm planning on upgrading to headers instead of the hipo manifolds, but still doing my homework on what headers will install easily without requiring any changes to the shock towers. I'm considering Tri Y's, but they only have a 1 1/8 diameter. I don't have pwr steering or disc brakes to get around, so it should be fairly straight forward. If anyone has a suggestion on headers , please let me know, if you have a part number that would also be appreicated. Thanks again to everyone who has given input and I'll try to stop asking so many question when I get this sorted out.

Rich
