Cam Questions and Opinions

I'm so car confused right now! I have a 91 gt and i wanna do more work to it. I want to put a E303 cam in it but i keep hearing mixed things. People tell me its good for daily driving and others say its bad. I heard it adds no power at all to a car with stock heads but im going to change the heads eventually just not this second. My car is also an AOD and i hear i need a Hi-Stall converter for racing but i don't wanna race it, i just wanna drive it everyday. Do i need the Hi-Stall? I wanna convert it to a 5 speed in the future so i don't wanna spend any unnecessary money. I don't care what rpm the car goes off the line, im not a pro race car driver or a street racer. I just like my cars loud and sounding good. Anyone have any other Cam in mind i could use? Should i stick with E303? Can i drive it fine with a stock AOD trans for about a year? I NEED and would appreciate your feedback. Thank You

Re: Cam Questions and Opinions

The ecam will be a great addition to your ride. I would do it in a heart beat. If you don't see allot of hp out of it, you will already have it installed when the time comes for your new heads. I personally think your stall for a street car will be alright, when you take your car to the track, it will do what it needs to for ya and you will have fun........On that note, i wouldn't convert to a 5 speed. I always here people saying that, but i always see the faster cars running automatics, so depending on a shift kit, valve body ect, that automatic can be fairly wicked.

Re: Cam Questions and Opinions

The E-Cam is a good all around cam for the sound and for a small performance gain. I loved mine, but I wasn't going to race it, and much like you I wanted the sound and be able to hear the rumble.
Some people get really bitchy about "the letter cams", but to each his own. I got mine for almost nothing and it was in perfect shape. It had a good sound on an otherwise stock small block with only bolt ons. My Fox had a 5 speed in it, but I have thought about getting an auto in my next Mustang. I like a stall speed converter. You don't have to get a really high RPM one. Just get a good one that suits your driving style the most.

Re: Cam Questions and Opinions

Thanks for the replies guys. That helped me narrow it down pretty damn quick and im going to order the cam within the next couple of weeks from AmericanMuscle.com. Is that going to be expensive to have installed? Anyone got a quick price quote off the top of there head?

Re: Cam Questions and Opinions

ok i'm kind of in the same boat you are. I have a pretty stock engine but wanted a letter cam also. I had my mind set on the E-cam but the more i read up on it i think i would go with a B. I read that the E-303 is more of an emissions friendly cam while the B is more of a power cam. I know they recommended running like 4.10's with the B but not sure about the auto thing.

I thought the B cam's were more for pistons without valve reliefs because it had a smaller lift than the E cam.

heck i dont know, i'm just saying thats what i came up with when i was searching for them. I know the B and E cams can be run with stock setups but i thought F and up you needed to check for clearance.
and what i saw said that the F-cam was more for boosted applications, the E was a little bigger than stock and B cam was more performance. I think it was in MM&FF where i saw that.

E-cams are too big for pistons with no valve relief, i had more than one person tell me that (go figure that's the kind of pistons I was running). And F-cams are good for supercharged motors. When I was going down the 351W route, I was going to run the x or z cam, I dont remember which now.

Bottom line, budget builds, just run with a FRP cam. They are a dime a dozen.

Re: Cam Questions and Opinions

So will a B and E cam fit in stock motor with no modification? Whats a better one to get?
