85 5.0 to 76 302

Can I use the water pump and flywheel from the 85 5.0 on the 76 302? This is for a bronco project......Clint sent me to ask.

Re: 85 5.0 to 76 302

Not sure about the water pump, but the balances on the flywheels are different. Pre 1982 engines were balanced to 28oz and those after 82 were balanced to 50oz......

Re: 85 5.0 to 76 302

i'm with hotwheels on this one, the flywheels are different balanced. I went from a 91 302 to a '72 302 and i think i had to use a different timing chain cover also, not sure about the pump itself tho

Re: 85 5.0 to 76 302

Thanks for the info, I'll have to stop in and check at the parts store to see what they can tell me about the flywheels(cost) and their tooth arangements.....getting a starter for that bellhousing and tooth count may proove difficult.....may just have to buy a new ring gear and do the cutting and welding.

Re: 85 5.0 to 76 302

to use the waterpump you definately need the associated timing cover.the 85 is a reverse rotation pump so you will also need a serpentine belt system or be real creative to make it spin correct.

Re: 85 5.0 to 76 302

i used the stock tranny/bellhousing/ and starter that came with my stang and didnt have any problems bolting them up to the '72 and the 28oz flywheel. The flywheels for the stangs are 157 tooth

The 85 bronco was the first year EFI but it still has v-belts. I did get a donor motor from a guy who pulled it from an 86 f-150 and it had the serpentine belts. It's that or just find another radiator with the issue being the water pump hoses going opposite of where the 85's did.

Re: 85 5.0 to 76 302

I'm going to be a cheapskate on this one......I know ya'll gonna shake your heads after reading this, but I've heard from a mechanic friend of mine that has seen this one work.

The difference is 22 oz......I'm going to shave/grind 22oz of material out of the weighted triangle on the back of that flywheel. I'm going to use my fishing scale to measure it too.....
