Spout Connector

What exactly does the spout connector on a 94 to 95 mustang do. The turbo kit I have says not to use it. Just curious, thanks!

Im pretty sure it does the same thing as on the 87-93 models... It advances the timing. The kit is suggesting you run locked timing which takes the computer advance out of it. The comp with spout IN can advance the timing with it OUT the computer can make NO changes to the timing...may I ask what kit you have??

TFI (Thick Film Ignition) SPOUT (SPark OUTput) function

The system uses a
Hall effect pickup (stator) in the
distributor, which generates a battery
voltage, 50% duty cycle square wave,
called the PIP signal, to the EEC
computer and the TFI module. The EEC
computer processes this signal and
sends out another battery voltage, 50%
duty cycle square wave, called the
SPOUT signal, to the TFI module. As
long as the TFI module is receiving a
SPOUT signal, it will fire the coil at the
rising edge of that signal (except during
engine cranking, when SPOUT is
ignored) and the vehicle will run with
the amount of timing advance
commanded by the computer. If the TFI
module does not receive the SPOUT
signal, it will fire the coil at the rising
edge of the PIP signal, and the vehicle
will run at base timing. This is true on
all TFI systems.

The PCM changes the timing based on various inputs such as: RPM, ECT, TPS, BARO, MAP, MAF, etc. The timing maps are all programmed into the PCM's stradegy. Removing the SPOUT shunt connector does not effect fuel delivery or any other function of the PCM. In my opinion, no hipo car should have the SPOUT because Ford's timing curves are wacky at best. I saw a 40 hp increase on one car by removing the SPOUT. The only disadvantage is hard cranking; which can by combated by a good starter and battery, or an ignition box with a built-in cranking retard function.

note- most SBFs like 30-36 degrees of initial lead

Oops, I forgot to define some acronyms...

PIP (Profiled Ignition Pick-up)
PCM (Powertrain Control Module)
EEC (Electronic Engine Control)
ECT (Engine Coolant Temp)

I'm sure everyone knows the rest.

so will the car actually run better without out? just harder to start?

what do you mean by 30-36 degrees of initial lead? without the spout in i set my timing to 10 i think and then with the spout in my timing went to 12 or 14 i think....why can't i just set the timing at 12 or 14 without the spout and run it that way? because the engine is harder to start at 12 degrees then 10? is that why they say its harder to start without it in? would not running the spout be like going back to the carb'd ways?

sorry alot of questions, just very interesting information here.

Without SPOUT you need to set your timing at 30-36. Unless you constantly monitor the amount of advance the computer is commanding under various conditions, you have no idea what the timing is. Make sure you listen for detonation if you do try it.

The car that picked up 40 hp without SPOUT was a flat-top 306, Victor high-ports, EFI Spyder, big solid roller, yada yada, 10,000 rpm capable with stock PCM. It also had a Digital 6 so cranking was not an issue; and a high stall and good fuel eliminated detonation.

On any power adder car, a retard function should be used regardless of whether SPOUT is in there--whether it be boost-referenced, or input controlled like a nitrous retard.
