351C vs. 351W

May not be the right section but I'm sure some of you have these motors. What is the difference in the Cleveland and Windsor 351's? Which would be the best to build?

Windsor has 10 times the amount of after market parts avail. the Cleveland is rated in the 335 series motors 351C,351M,400 the heads can be swapped between all 3 but thats about it the windsor is more like a 289 and a 302 plus i've heard of oiling issues at high rpm on the clevelands.. never seen it but i've heard of it... oh and its harder and harder to find parts for a cleveland...

The differences between the 2 will be 1) based in the deck heights -cleveland being 9.213 and Windsor being 8.206, and 2) also the heads shape being of different angles to each other. The cleveland heads are shaped in a way that makes the exhaust port face fit flush in line with the block, therefore giving the "appearance" that the engine is larger when in fact the engine only "looks" wider than it actually is. On the other hand, the windsor heads have a different exhaust port face angle which is more upright in angle than the clevo. These heads aswell as the deck height play an advantage in so far as engine "appearance" and fitting is concerned. Clevo intake manifolds are wider than windsors for the reason being the intake port faces are at once again, a different angle.

These differences will play a major part in the physical size, look and shape of the motor in an engine bay, and even though they look worlds apart, the block angle only is the same and not the overall appearance!

In my opinion i would go with the windsor block, it has alot of aftermarket parts, that are really affordable.

Cleavland's are best suited for cars they originally came in. They can rock but are pretty darn heavy and expensive compared to W's.

Oiling issues at high RPM's I've found to be a pretty big rumor. What do you consider high RPM's. 6, 7, 8k? 4V heads on a Cleavland built correctly can see >7K pretty easily and thats where the problems arise but its not isolated to just the C's. Pretty much any stock block and oiling system will start having issues at that point. Even with 5w30 my 351c in the Mach 1 sees 80 psi cold and 40 psi hot idle measured at the back of the block with a std oiling system and 15k miles on it.

Thanks for the responses. I knew there was a larger aftermarket for the Windsor but just wanted some opinions.

over here in oz the cleveland is a bit more comin then the windsor, parts an stuff are about the same cleveland's seem to have problems with spliting bores but if you half grout the block less likely to an as for the oiling problem you run a restricter kit which give more oil to the bottom end rather then the top where its not really needed they got some clevo over here making 1300HP on a standard block with twin turbos you can also get a bubble block which is what i run they have thicker bores.
right pic cleveland

Re: 351C vs. 351W

You can make just about any motor run hard. But for me there is only one 351. That's the high winding "rat like" 351CJ 4V with 3.25 street gears. Yeah Ford borrowed the canted thing from the bow tie Rats. Love the Clevelands they come on strong above 2,800rpm and totally scream above 5,000 rpm. You can just feel the power curve coming on stronger and stronger as they wrap up. The heads and manifold we're design for rev's right from the get-go. I'm old school so do your thing to fit your budget and drivin style. And if your going to race take-it-to-the track not the street. If you go Cleveland consider 70' quench heads on the 73' 351 CJ short block. That will yield a streetable bolt-on 10:1 compression ratio range with stock piston's and heads. There are simple tweaks to deal with the high rev oiling issue.

Nothing like the far-a-way sound of a screaming, chirping 351-C and Rat piercing through the night air.
