New old car

So I picked up that 89 Notch for my son. I was talking to the guy I bought it from and he said when he picked it up "old boy told me she would run but his lips were moving when he said it". So today I take a new battery, a can of gas and a can of either. I spent 20 minutes and bam! she fires up. No ticks or knocks in the engine at all just an exhaust leak at the manifold.

Put air in the tires and plugged one then it was time to see how the transmission is. Holy shit she shifted smooth and even reverse worked with no isues other than needing a new filter and fresh fluid. Call a buddy to act as a chase car and hit the road with it.

Got about 4 miles and started feeling a brake hang up... no big deal she has been sitting forever and the brakes looked it. Stopped let it cool then worked the E brake and brake pedal a few times. Felt it let loose and continued on the road the 20 miles to my buddys house. Drivers power window works, power mirrors work, transmission was smooth as butter, engine ran as strong as a four banger 89 should so it looks like I start with the brakes then on to the exhaust leak.

The guy I bought it from was amazed we drove it away!! She is gonna need some operational work as well as a lot of cosmetic stuff but it will make one nice notch if he keeps after it!

what are the plans for it, keep it a 4 banger or going with a v8 swap?

I am going to leave that up to him. I will help him with the outside and interior the rest is his to dream. I wouldnt mind seeing a turbo on the 4 until he learns to handle a car.

For now the 4 is fine. The state of Florida insurance rates on a 16 year old are HUGE!
