'95 GT: Installed New Distributor - timing off?

Just installed a new Mallory dist. Marked the old one at #1 at TDC (I thought). Put new one in same marks, timed the engine @ 10 BTDC with SPOUT out. At 3500 it pings like a firecracker, so I backed the timing down to 2 BTDC. No ping, but now the Crane Ign box rev limiter kicks in at about 4500 instead of 5500 (If I disconnect the Crane, it revs past 5500 like it's supposed to. It's also slow (sluggish, not quick reving like it supposed to be). Did I install the Dist a tooth off, or is something else wrong?

Re: '95 GT: Installed New Distributor - timing off?

Sounds like it may be a tooth off........First thing i would do is bump the motor over till the timing indicator shows it is at 0*s or close. Pull the number one plug on the front passenger side of the engine, take a socket and place it on the main dampner bolt (15/16), place a small phillips screw driver in the spark plug hole, holding the screw driver with one hand, turn the wrench with the other towards 0*'s and see if you feel the top of the piston move with the screw driver. If you feel the top of the piston move, you are at top dead center. Now look at your cap, see where the number one wire is, pull the cap and make sure the rotor is lining up with the spot where it matches the location of the number one wire.........If the rotor is pointing the other direction (180*'s) or if it is off about one spark plug wire position, you'll either have to move the distributor one tooth or pull the dist and rotate the rotor 180*'s so it is at number one......I would think if it were off 180, it wouldn't run, so chances are you are off one tooth.........

How important is the part about finding the compression stroke at TDC?
Wouldn't the Dist rotor always point to the same mark, whether compression stroke or not?

No it needs to be on compression stroke it turns at 1/2 engine speed so if your not on compression it will fire at the wrong time
