temp?

so i built a stock lower end for a guy put moly rings in it and high perfomrsnce clevette bearings used a main support and a windage tray , stock water pump an f303 cam and som trick flow heads roller rockers and trick flow heat intake 160 f thermostat factory water pump and radatior.

so my problem is that my dash temp gauge says im running hot and on my moats the binary editor says im running around 215f so i installed an manual
gauge and it says im only at like 190 to 200 f , i know my gauge for dash is at the front left of the intake my ecu temp is on the heater acc line , in installed the manual gauge at the rear of the intake drivers side . so am i over heating in the front not in the rear or is it something i did wrong ,

freind has a 1992 with a 347 and world heads and his factory gauge is doing the same thing he installed a manual gauge on the passanger rear and it says its ok while his dash says over heating so which is wright anyone ever ran into this ??

Re: temp?

Never heard of that problem. I would be skeptical of the sending unit.

Mine never had any over heating issues, so I can't really tell you from experience. BUT I have never heard of anyone else having such a difference in engine temps. Hope you figure it out soon though, because it could be a very bad day if something else happened to compound it.

Re: temp?

Can you hook up a manual gauge at the front to check the temp and see if there is a difference?

Re: temp?

the temps vary due to different locations, the spot on the intake at the driver side rear seems to get the lowest readings. Most use that spot for stock gauge and use stock location for the mechanical gauge, then post that their stock gauge reads low lol

The single most accurate place to measure the temp is the t-stat housing. ALL coolant leaves there

what/where is the Moates taking its readings from ??

The stock gauge setup is junk I never ever trust the readings, I put a mechanical in the T-stat housing and use that reading.

215*F is a bit high but depends on weather temps/cooling system used. I run about 190-205 in the summer with the turbo kit making major heat.

are the fans always on or temp controlled?
do you know how many CFM the fans are??

the stock pump is fine but the stock rad is a bit small and prolly not the most efficient due to age.

USUALLY if the car overheats in stop go traffic or idle but is fine on the highway its a airflow problem.

I forgot to mention I run a bigger then stock rad ($100 at autozone) and a SN-95 fan and high amp relay setup ($50 at local bone yard/autozone)

Re: temp?

Not sure the vfm of the fan but radator is only a week old but it's just a factory repacement from autozone and fans are always on and car will over heat at idle or while driving

-------- added 1 Minutes and 51 Seconds later --------

Is the sn 95 alot thicker I only have about a 1/2 inch between fan and crank pulley due to the supercharger pulley was added on

Re: temp?

Hi all, havent posted in a long while.
So my 2c is that you have an original stock radiator. You upgraded the HP and now your making more heat. The stock rad when new was just adequate for the 302. Now its time for an upgrade. Get a decent aftermarket aluminum radiator that will allow your fans to work as intended.
So let us know how it goes!
Good luck!
