What Cam

Ok fella's Advice time again. My 93 is in the shop getting the motor pulled as we speak. I am getting it punched out to a 306 and going with all forged internals. I am keeping the stock heads for now, but plan on getting a new set in a few months. The shop told me to go with the E303 cam since this will be driven several time a week. The car is supercharged pushing about 8psi of boost. you can see the rest of my mods below in my sig. Anyway, is the e303 a good choice, or would you guys reccomend another type of cam. Again this is not my daily driver but will be driven to work on nice days. i am not trying to make a 500 horse motor, just one that runs good and I can beat on. In opinions? Anybody got a set of heads they are lookin to get rid of?

thanks
Skip

Re: What Cam

this is a good question as i have been wondering about a cam also, i have heard that the E cam is the largest you can go with stock heads, but other than that i am clueless.

Re: What Cam

The e cam or the trickflow stage 1 cam, are identical......so that there would just be a matter of choice. With a supercharged engine, i would look at something a bit more towards the charger, like an anderson B-31, which is ground for great power and daily driving......, but they are damn expensive, like 299.00 i believe.

Re: What Cam

If you are getting an off the shelf camshaft....the E-Cam is an excellent choice.....works great.

I personally would go custom....but for the price and availability....the E-cam is one of the best.

Another good option would be the:

Steeda #19 cam....VERY good cam. .480 lift / 220 int / 226exh 112ls

Dougy, I believe the AFM cams were designed around an aluminum head. I could be wrong, but for what he is wanting to do with stock heads.....those might not work out.

And the E-303 is "symetrical" The TFS cam is split.....and the Ecam is on a 110 , the TFS 112.

TFS cam is around .500 int / .510 exh lift....and 220int / 225exh duration.

Ecam is .498 lift and 220/220

Re: What Cam

wow, thats what I love about this site. Ask a question and get an answer in the time it takes to get the kids to bed and a haircut. I guess that I will go with the E. I really do want to get some good heads because I know it will be a BIG jump in power, but I just dont have the cash to drop another 1500-2000 on a good set now. I am trying real hard to build in parts now so that I wont have to go back into the bottom end, or even below the heads again. After I get the car back and drive it for a few months and fill the car fund back up I will do with a good set of heads and some roller rockers. After that I should be happy for a while. Again, thanks for letting me know I have chosen well with the E. Cheers!!!

Skip
p.s. sound off if you have some cheap heads for sale...

Re: What Cam

I posted a bunch but you did at the same time.

If you're looking for a set of heads later, just do the cam then. It's not tough to get the timing cover and water pump off when the heads are. Then you pull the lifters, pull the cam and get a nice matched set with a cam and heads.

If you do get one now, the TFS was my favorite out of the cams mentioned here with it's split duration. The E cam has done well in blown applications too so it's right up there. You can get the E for around $100 used or the TFS for $180 new from Summit.
Good luck
Dave

I liked the split duration of the TFS cam and it ran smooth. They all are fine but the TFS was my favorite at that power level. I think it's still like $170 or so from Summit. It won't beat up your stock springs either.
that is the cam in my new engine....for the turbos

Re: What Cam

TFS are GREAT cams. They amazingly perform well on motor, nitrous AND s/c.

Dave, I agree. As far as a mild set-up, the stg1 and the Ecam are pretty comparable. Results have gone both ways for those cams.

Re: What Cam

I really like my E cam. I paid $75 for it used, and it looked absolutely brand new. Better than the cam that came in my short block!
I am looking into getting a new intake, taller valve covers, and some roller rockers maybe by next tax time. Funds are too tight right now.

Good luck with either of those 2 cams. I have heard good things about both of them!
