Heads lifting under boost-a pictorial recap

A recap from before the hack:
Quarter mile mph down from 116 to 103.
First blamed the plug wires since there was some arcing. Not the problem
Fuel pump was dieing. Switched out a 140 lph in tank plus a 240 lph inline for a 255 walbro intank. The old intank one seemed to have metal shavings in it.

New pump worked well but noticed bubbles in the coolant overflow-lots of them. Coolant was pressurized under boost.

Pulled the heads. Here are some pictures.
You can see where the compression or exaust made its own path thru the headgasket past the metal ring to the coolant.

Up for this weekend: ARP headstuds, ARP headerstuds and felpro 1133 MLS gaskets.
Erich

Yeah, it would suck to not get a "real run" in all season. It is interesting diagnosing stuff. It will be less interesting if I have problems with these 72 buck a piece headgaskets.

I would pull the top head bolts 5-8 ft# more then the lowers I did this on my wifes s/c car and it seemed to help some as the gaskets always blew on the top the same place as yours just a thought.

Got one side in. Studs and MLS gaskets. Of course on the first nut to tighten, my flippin torque wrench makes a big cracking noise. I loosened it and tightened again after making sure the wrench was still working.

You can always tighten the ARP head stud MORE than what they recommend you know to help...I think the ones on my old 89 said to go to something like 75 or 80...I had them at 90-95, and on my 99 I have them at 85-90 and I have NO problems with headgaskets...I am only running 15psi, but still no issues...we will see later when I up the boost once I finish learning how to tune.

Good luck
