4 banger exhaust

For those who have had 4cyl's and have done an exhaust on them, what have you found to be the best sounding. My car is N/A so it will obviously sound different than a turbo'd. But I'm just wondering is there anything that won't sound like a bee hive in a megaphone. The closer I can get to a muscle car sound the happier I'll be. For ricers I like the way evo's and STI's sound, but if my only option is sounding like a $200 integra with a coffee can, I'll pass. I can just tell when driving and listening that the rediculously over sized intake I made is flowing more in than the exhaust is flowing out, and I've wanted to change the stock exhaust forever.

Re: 4 banger exhaust

Man that is a tricky question right there!

I have heard very few 4's that sounded really good with a deep tone all the way through the RPM band. The few that I did hear, would buzz the hell out of you inside the car.

Re: 4 banger exhaust

I actually messed with trying to beef up a 2.3 N/A stang. I found this header from racer walsh. I used this, and went with a full 2.25" single exhaust through a 2.25" two chamber flowmaster. If I could do it over again, I'd use this header, make sure it goes through a cat converter, and through a 3 chamber flowmaster all 2.25". The header has a collector of 2.5", but you can use the adaptor they do to reduce it to 2.25". I wish I had pics of what I did. I still have the header laying around, but I'm going to hang onto it. I did notice an improvement in performance. What does your intake look like?

Sorry, I forgot the link.

I also have other 4 banger performance parts links if you're interested.

Re: 4 banger exhaust

Thanks for the link. As far as what my intake looks like, it kind of looks like a rigged up pile of poo. The stock tubing broke on me on a drive one time, and I had just recently messed with the intake on a dodge diesel, so I had those parts in the car. So it has a cone filter that is like 6in X 9in routed to the fender like a cold air on a 5.0. With a lot of the 3 inch tubing from the diesel, and some PVC pipe. I made a goofy adapter for the mass air sensor and then it's necked down at the motor. So it's still restricted to the size on the motor, but without the really squeezed down sound deadening piece. It was only supposed to be a temporary fix, but it actually sounds pretty throaty so I kept it. But I can tell I lost throttle response with it.

Re: 4 banger exhaust

i had a cherry bomb on an 86 4banger and that thing was LOUD, sounded like a damn circle track car. I had to take that off and put a turbo muffler on it. I agree with JPM that a header with a hiflow cat and some kind of chambered muffler would sound nice. Have you searched youtube?

Re: 4 banger exhaust

Don't bother with youtube, i tried that. All I found was ricearoni wanna bees with 2 chamber and no other restriction. Basically what I was running, and it sounded like shart. I forgot to mention, that I ran the exhaust completely on the passanger side as well to cut down on exhaust material costs. I welded up my own midpipe.
