Tach problem

Well, we got the kid another car after his got wrecked earlier this month. It's a Oxford white 92 LX hatch with a four banger. I'll get pics and stuff when I get a new camera, but it's in much better shape than the 84 was and was only $1700 with 124,676 on the odometer. Besides the blown air shocks on the rear (which we have already replaced), the only real problem we have is the tach. When you start the car, it goes to 2500 rpm and stays there. The motor is not running nearly that fast. It is idling at the normal rpms just the tach reading way high. The tach does go up as you rev the motor and comes back when you let off. It just never goes below 2500 while running. When the engine is off, it falls to 0 like it should. All the other gauges work correctly. What gives?

Re: Tach problem

I would try a couple things first.........make sure the coil wire is in good shape and that it has dielectric on the contacts, then check all of the spark plug wires. Second i would check the iac on the side of the throttle body, make sure it's clean inside...

Re: Tach problem

Did I mention that it's a DIS igntion system and has two plugs per cyclinder? I will check all of the wires and IAC though.

Re: Tach problem

Any chance this is due to one or both of the coil packs going bad?

Re: Tach problem

I would look at either having your ICM (ignition control module) tested at napa or replace it.....It could be a coil pack, and maybe napa or some auto store can test that too.
