When should you get a tuner?

I have been wondering when you should get a tuner (SCT, Diablo, etc.). I know I will need one when I swap the gears to get the speedo right, but is there any benefit whatsoever for an essentially stock car? The odds of having the funds to buy one at the same time as some other modification are not that great for me.

I bought mine for a nearly stock car .. put the perf. tune on and it was a noticable difference.

Really? I would like to get one, but then again I'm kind of hesitant because I'm really not all that educated about what I should do with it. (OK, not educated at all.) How do you know what to change and what to leave alone to maximize the car?

I don't think you would do much with it then .. with mine, I just uploaded the performance tune that came with it. When I get my gears I will adjust the speedo. I have used it to diagnose thrown codes as well. You can remove the limiters (I think), disable lights on the dash, disable the trac-control etc. Lots of functions. I don't mess much with the engine stuff (timing etc) cause I dont know enough about it.

get a sct tuner. don't do mail order. get it from a dealer who has a dyno and can get all the hidden hp out of your car. i gained 40 hp and 70 tq to the wheels from my tune.
you can also adjust for gear and tire changes and your 2-step. it will read codes also.

I got the Diablo, got a used (unmarried) one from a guy on another board for $250. My car dyno'd at approx. 250RWHP and 290RWTQ with the tune, intake, and cat-back.
