just repaired odometer/tripometer prob

the car is a 96 that i bought new. at 71k the odo/tripometer quit working. i seached this site and the net for answers and found that there's a worm driven plastic gear that wears and breaks.

after having learned the local junkyards wanted $100 for a replacement cluster (with varying miles and the possibility this could happen again with a used cluster) i got a rebuilt speedo/tach pod for $290 from my local ford dealer. install took about 20 mins. and all is now working again.

i had pulled the cluster out a few days ago trying to figure out how to replace just the gear and until i got the replacement pod, i couldn't figure out how to get just the speedo/tach pod out. once i saw the rebuilt, it became clear; the instrument cluster comprises of three pods: temp/gas to the left, speedo/tach center and battery/oil to the right. take a small flat bladed screwdriver to the left pod, raise gently and move an inch or two to the left of the instrument cluster. take the same screwdriver and repeat to the right side pod. the center pod (speedo/tach) can now be removed and replaced.

that's it! all of twenty minutes from removal from dash to replacement.

once i removed the old pod, i saw i could have probably replaced just the worn out gear. i found an online link for one for $25 and could have saved a heap of $$.

oh well, live and learn.

Took this from another site, I also have a 96 and am having the same probs. so I went lookin for a fix and if anyone else needs it hope this helps......
